The Heart of Boaz: Showing Kindness to Those in Need

In Ruth 2:8–13, we see a beautiful example of kindness through Boaz.

Ruth was a widow and a foreigner. She had left her homeland to stay with Naomi, her mother-in-law, and was now working in the fields to gather enough food for them to survive. She was in a vulnerable position, with very little security or support.

But Boaz noticed her.

Instead of ignoring Ruth, Boaz welcomed her into his field. He told her to stay with his workers, made sure no one would harm her, and allowed her to drink from the water provided for his workers. He gave Ruth more than food—he gave her safety, dignity, encouragement, and hope.

What makes this story especially powerful is that Ruth was a foreigner. Boaz could have treated her as an outsider, but he chose to show compassion.

Ruth was surprised by his kindness. She asked why he had noticed her when she was a foreigner. Boaz responded by recognizing everything she had done for Naomi and the sacrifices she had made.

Then Boaz said something beautiful: Ruth had come to seek refuge under the wings of the God of Israel.

This reminds us that God’s grace is not meant to stop with us. It should flow through us to others.

Boaz became an instrument of God’s kindness in Ruth’s life. Through his actions, Ruth experienced protection and provision during a difficult season.

Today, many people still feel like Ruth—struggling, alone, overlooked, rejected, or simply trying to survive. We may not always be able to change their entire situation, but we can choose to notice them, listen to them, encourage them, protect their dignity, and help when we can.

Being like Boaz does not always require a grand gesture.

Sometimes it is as simple as sharing what we have, helping someone who is struggling, giving someone an opportunity, listening to someone who needs to be heard, or showing kindness to someone who cannot give anything in return.

The challenge is not only to ask, “Who will help people like Ruth?”

The better question is:

“Lord, can You make me a Boaz to someone who needs Your kindness today?”

When God’s grace changes our hearts, His kindness can reach others through our ordinary actions.

Be faithful. Notice people. Show kindness. Let God’s grace flow through you.

Answering the Reflection

• Someone around me who may be feeling overlooked, vulnerable, or alone could be a classmate, coworker, neighbor, family member, or friend going through a difficult season. I can become more aware of their needs instead of assuming everything is fine.
• I can show kindness by listening without judgment, offering encouragement, including them in conversations or activities, helping with a practical need, or simply reminding them that they are not alone.
• I can allow God’s grace to flow through my actions by choosing patience, forgiveness, generosity, and compassion. I should not keep God’s love to myself but share it through the way I treat others.
• One practical way I can become a source of help and hope is to intentionally check on someone who may be struggling and offer specific support, such as spending time with them, helping with a task, or connecting them with additional assistance if needed.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the kindness and grace reflected in Boaz’s actions. Help me notice people who are struggling, overlooked, or in need. Give me a compassionate heart and the courage to offer encouragement, protection, and practical help. Teach me to treat every person with dignity and respect. May Your grace flow through my words and actions so that others can experience Your love through me. Amen.
