When God’s Word Is Hard to Follow

A Real-Life Situation

Imagine that you are at work and you discover a mistake that no one else has noticed. You could stay quiet and avoid getting blamed, or you could be honest about what happened.

Being honest may feel difficult, especially if admitting the mistake could affect your reputation or your work.

But this is where God's Word becomes real in our lives.

Obedience is not always about making the easiest choice. Sometimes it means choosing what is right even when it costs us something.

The same thing can happen in our family, relationships, finances, friendships, and decisions. We may know what God wants us to do, but our emotions may tell us to do something else.

What Can We Learn?

Jesus said that the person who hears His words and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock (Matthew 7:24–25).

The storm still came.

The difference was the foundation.

Following God does not mean we will never experience problems. We will still face disappointment, pressure, rejection, financial difficulties, family problems, and uncertainty.

But when our lives are built on God's Word, we have something solid to hold on to when those storms come.

Three Simple Reminders

1. Don't only hear God's Word—apply it.

It is easy to listen to a sermon, read the Bible, or agree with a Bible verse. But the real question is:

"What will I do because of what God has shown me?"

Even one small act of obedience can be a step of faith.

2. Obedience requires trust.

Sometimes we don't understand why God asks us to wait, forgive, be honest, let go, or choose a different path.

We may not see the whole picture.

But obedience says:

"Lord, I don't understand everything, but I trust You."

3. Build your life on the Rock.

Storms will come whether we are prepared for them or not.

The goal is not to build a life without storms. The goal is to build our lives on Jesus so that when storms come, our foundation remains firm.

Reflection

Take a moment and ask yourself:

• What is God teaching me through His Word right now?
• Is there something I already know I should obey but have been delaying?
• Am I allowing my feelings to become more important than God's Word?
• What is one practical step of obedience I can take this week?

Sometimes obedience begins with something very simple:

Forgive someone. Tell the truth. Keep your commitment. Stop something that is leading you away from God. Be patient. Wait on God's timing. Ask for forgiveness. Choose what is right even when nobody is watching.

We don't obey God because life will always become easier.

We obey because He is trustworthy, and Jesus is worthy of our trust.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for giving us Your Word to guide us in our lives.

Forgive us for the times when we hear Your Word but choose to follow our own feelings, plans, and desires instead.

Help us to trust You even when obedience is difficult. Give us courage to do what is right, humility to accept correction, and patience when we need to wait for Your timing.

When the storms of life come, remind us to build our lives on You and Your Word.

Help us not only to hear Your Word but to live it every day—in our families, work, relationships, decisions, and responsibilities.

May our lives show others that You are trustworthy and worthy of our obedience.
